Solutions (for the 1st edition)

The solutions to the exercises in the first edition of the book are contained in the PDF file below:

Answer Key – Complete – WFTNIBE

Up until mid-2014 this solution key was sent only to teachers who had ordered books. However, as the second edition has now superseded the first edition with regards to classroom use, the first edition is increasingly being used by students for their own private study and revision. Making the solutions freely available is intended to help them in their learning.

For the second edition, the full solutions are contained only in the accompanying printed teachers’ guide, which is sold to accompany class sets of ten books or more. However, the answers to selected exercises are included at the back of the student exercise book to aid student self-assessment.

  1. Dear Mr. McBride
We have a class set of Workbook for the New IB Economics here at Prague British School but I have just started working here and the solutions must have been sent to my predecessor. I would be most grateful if you could please send me the solutions, so I can use your book in class without having to work through every exercise

    Regards
    Paul Gilliland

    • Administrator says:

      Dear Paul,
Thanks for your message. I will send the solutions off to you right away. As well, if you would like to order books for next year, I would ask you to let me know by the end of November so that I can send them from my store of books in Oman, home of the $5.20/kg worldwide airmail postal rate.
      Best wishes,
      Bryce

  2. Education Initiative Trust says:

    Dear Mr. McBride,

We have purchased the Workbook for the New IB Economics as our library resource for our Economics teacher & students at Bombay International School, India. We shall be most grateful if you could please send us the free PDF file of solutions.
    Thanking you.

    • Administrator says:

Thank you for your email. I know I must have sent the solutions to you last year but, as a PDF file, it is easy to see how they might have gotten lost in the meantime. Anyway, I will send you the file right away. Thanks for using the resource – if you want additional copies I would encourage you to order them before the end of November as after that time I will be sending the books out from Canada, and will have to increase the price to take into account higher postage fees.

  3. Basma Rasheed says:

I have purchased the Workbook for the New I.B. Economics but did not receive a free PDF file of solutions, if you could please send it to me that would be great.

    Thanks.

    • Administrator says:

I would be happy to send you the file to the email address indicated in your post. If you could write and let me know from where you bought your copy and at what school you are teaching, I would appreciate it – it is interesting for me to keep a record of where the book is being used.

    Hi Mr. McBride:

I have a copy of your workbook (it’s great!), but when this was given to me by my administrators it did not include a PDF of the correct answers. Would you send that to me at steven.bushong@windermereprep.com? Thanks!

  6. Qiyu Li says:

    Hi Mr. McBride:
I have a copy of you book, which i bought from amazon and it is the best practice book i found for my students! I am teaching IB Econ in China and it is really hard to get resources. However, i didn’t get the solution book and could you please send me a pdf version of it to qiyuli12345@yeah.net?
    Thank you

    • Administrator says:

Thank you for the kind words about the book. I will send you the solutions key PDF in a few minutes.

      Bryce

      • Bipin Kala says:

        Dear McBride,
Hi, I have just started teaching IB Economics in Mumbai India, and using workbook 2nd edition with my students. At present I have to steal my time to solve these exercises myself.
I will appreciate if I can receive a solution for this book.
        Regards
        bipinkala

        • Administrator says:

          Dear Bipinkala,

Thank you for your message. Sadly, I am not sending out solutions keys to all who purchase single copies of the book. Only schools which purchase a class set of at least ten copies of the student text are permitted to order an accompanying teachers’ guide.

However, if you are using the book as a supplemental resource, there are still lots of answers and solutions available. First, there are the solutions in the back of the student exercise book. Second, the solutions to the Paper 3-style questions that are found in the book are available for free online from http://www.gumroad.com/bryce (the specific link is printed on the solutions page in the exercise book).

I hope this is helpful. As well, as I think BDS ordered a copy of the first edition, and as many of the exercises are the same or similar in the two editions, you may find the solutions for the first edition of the book helpful when looking at the questions in the second edition exercise book. The solutions for the questions in the first edition are freely available on the website, on the ‘Solutions’ page.

          All the best,

          Bryce

      Dear Rebecca,

It appears you are a student at the Australian International School, Singapore. I passed the solutions key to the economics teacher there in December, so if you seek the solutions to the exercises in the book, I would suggest asking Mr Bhogal.

      Best wishes,

  8. Alric Chong says:

Regarding the tests, I believe I do have some model answers up for some of them but sadly I do not have model answers prepared for all of them.

    Dear Bryce,

We are using the Economics workbook (1st edition) at our school, but do not have the solutions to it. I would very much appreciate if you can send me the pdf file with solutions. My students are finding it very helpful.

    Thank you,
    Chris Eberle

    • Administrator says:

      Dear Chris,
It is great to hear that the book is being used at Raha International School – please say ‘hi’ to my old friend Wayne MacInnis, with whom I had the pleasure of working in the early 1990s.
Please also be sure to, even if you are using the first edition book, refer your students to the online lessons from the second edition that are available on the website as they do incorporate some improvements, in particular to the lessons on externalities and the balance of payments.
Regarding your request, I will send the solutions file to you in a moment

        Regards, Hossam

        • Administrator says:

          Dear Hossam,
Thank you for your note. I wrote you an email just now but wanted to post as well that students are welcome to ask their teachers for the solutions to the book’s problems where the book is being used in class. I know that your son’s teacher has the PDF of solutions and I am sure that he would be willing to let your son look at it to check his answers.
          All the best,

  20. Mark Moretuzzo says:

    Hi Bryce

Just started using the book this past year and my students and I are really enjoying it. I was wondering if there is a way to access the solutions to the test and quizzes you have posted either in the solution guide or online. Thank you

    • Administrator says:

      Hi Mark,
Thank you for your comment, as you raise a good point. I haven’t made up answer keys to the tests and quizzes found in the book and online as the IB itself is sort of vague as to such things – they do make mark schemes but then they always add ‘any other reasonable answers should also be given full consideration’ or some such. Essentially, so long as diagrams are spot on, as per the syllabus, 2 marks. So long as a diagram is correct, correctly labelled and appropriate, 2 marks. So long as that diagram is explained fully, both in terms of what it is intended to illustrate and in terms of what the points in the diagram refer to, another 2 points. And then, moving on to evaluation, so long as the student has looked at the effectiveness and accordance with theory of a policy solution, and had a look at the long-term and short term impacts of said policy decision, and then, at the end, made a definitive judgement concerning the wisdom or folly of the proposed policy, they ought to be rewarded nearly full marks. If there is no definitive judgement, they ought not earn more than 5 out of 8, and if there are errors in their reasoning or big omissions in their evaluation, less, but so long as they make and substantiate a good 4 or 5 good points and actually evaluate, they usually are in the 6-8 range.
I hope this is helpful. Thanks again for writing.
All the best for a great school year.
      Bryce

    Dorothy

    • Administrator says:

      Hi Dorothy,

Thank you for your message. I have written you an email already, but I will reiterate what I have said there here as well. If you have a class set of the books, reply to my email and let me know where you ordered your books and I will send you a teachers’ guide. However, if you just have a single copy of the student exercise book, please be sure to look at the selected answers at the back of the book and follow the URL at the top of the page of selected answers to access the solution key for the Paper 3 questions.

I hope this is helpful and I look forward to hearing from you soon,
